The Crown Bridges project is one of Finland’s most demanding tramway and bridge construction projects. The approximately 10-kilometre tram connection combines tramway, street, and civil structure construction within a large alliance project. Close collaboration between multiple design disciplines, contractors, and the client requires project information to be easily accessible and provide an up-to-date overall picture.
Within the Crown Bridges Alliance, Vektor.io serves as a shared browser-based interface where BIM models, as-built data, drone data, and geospatial information are brought together in a single view.
Making BIM models part of everyday project work
BIM models are widely used throughout the Crown Bridges project. Vektor.io has supported the project’s goal of making BIM models available not only for design and BIM coordination, but for the entire project organisation.
According to Heikki Putkonen, Design Manager at Sweco Finland Oy, Vektor.io has become a core tool in design coordination meetings between different design disciplines. It has been used particularly actively to coordinate water supply and utility designs.
According to Putkonen, the 3D view significantly improves the understanding of design solutions compared to traditional 2D drawings. It has also made it easier to present designs to project stakeholders.

Since work began in 2020, the use of BIM models has expanded significantly. More and more people have incorporated BIM models into their daily work, regardless of their previous experience.

As-built data continues to deliver value after project completion
The Crown Bridges Alliance has created post-construction as-built models for the completed project sections. Vektor.io serves as the platform where these as-built models are stored for future use.
According to Miikka Gröndahl, the as-built models provide valuable baseline information for future investments and follow-up projects while also supporting maintenance, asset management and infrastructure lifecycle management.
The as-built data will also remain available through the same environment during the alliance’s post-completion liability period.

About the project
The Crown Bridges project is one of Helsinki’s most significant public transport and infrastructure projects. The alliance is constructing a new tram connection between Laajasalo and Hakaniemi, the Merihaansilta Bridge, and the associated streets and infrastructure. The approximately 10-kilometre tram route will connect Laajasalo, Korkeasaari and Kalasatama with Helsinki city centre, significantly improving mobility and reshaping the city’s urban landscape.
The alliance partners are the City of Helsinki, Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd (Pääkaupunkiseudun Kaupunkiliikenne), NRC Group Finland Oy, YIT Infra Oy, Ramboll Finland Oy, Sweco Finland Oy and Sitowise Oy.
The project began in 2019 and is scheduled for completion in 2027. The estimated construction cost is approximately €326 million.
