Meet the Team: Lead Software Engineer Mikko Roihuvuo

13.08.2025

Mikko Roihuvuo works at Vektor.io as a Lead Software Engineer, and what drives him most is knowing that his work helps someone — even if it’s just making one task a little bit easier.

For the past year and a half, Mikko has served as the lead developer on Vektor.io Projects, the next-generation version of the company’s product. Originally a physics student, Mikko soon became interested in technology and moved to work in IT because there seemed to be a natural need for talented people.

“In this field, there’s a clear demand for skill. If you know what you’re doing, companies will want you — you don’t have to sell yourself,” Mikko explains.

That’s exactly what happened with Vektor.io. The company was originally hiring for a more traditional developer role, but adjusted the position once they met Mikko. He appreciates the flexibility and opportunity that come with working in a smaller company — especially the chance to collaborate directly with the founders and have a say in the product direction.

A Code With Meaning

Mikko sees software development as a modern craft, where self-taught professionals often rise based on skill, not just credentials. His work mostly focuses on internal product development — projects that scale across many customer use cases. This is what brings him meaningfulness, to know that your code has made someone’s day a bit easier.

“All the effort we put into improving the product, even if it’s just one click less or faster performance — knowing that multiple people benefit from that feels meaningful,” Mikko says.

He’s not primarily driven by the technology itself, but by what technology can do — how it can solve real problems and make everyday life better.

A Day in the Life: Code and Conversation

Mikko sees himself as a fast-paced and adaptable developer who enjoys taking on a variety of technical challenges. He also stands out as unusually outgoing for a developer — someone who would happily spend the whole day chatting with people.

He starts his mornings with a walk to the office — remote work isn’t for him. He works a reduced six-hour day, though flow state may keep him coding longer.

“The day starts at 9 a.m. with a meeting where our small team goes over what everyone’s working on. After that, I spend most of the day focused on frontend development. The work has been rewarding, and I’ve had the chance to do it with a good amount of calm and focus.”

Over the years, Mikko has gradually shifted from backend development to frontend — partly out of necessity, partly out of genuine interest. He’s also passionate about building a strong team spirit and believes that a good atmosphere is key to making everyday work run smoothly.

People First – At Work and Beyond

Outside of work, Mikko’s life is just as community-driven. He sings in four choirs, plays video and board games, and runs in orienteering races — including the legendary Jukola relay every year as part of a team with his neighbors.

“People are my biggest motivator — at work and in life. If I can help make someone’s day easier, that’s what makes my work meaningful.”
