Vektor.io’s information modeling tool has been selected to support the development of the Vantaa light rail project. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025, with the line expected to be operational by 2029. Along the tram route, new residential and business areas are planned to accommodate thousands of new residents and jobs.

The Vantaa light rail is a large-scale, multi-phase project where coordination between various planning and implementation stages—as well as among numerous stakeholders—is critical. Vektor.io provides an efficient and visual solution to meet these needs.

“With the Vantaa light rail, Vektor.io is now being used in all ongoing tramway projects in Finland. We are grateful for the trust placed in us by these major urban development initiatives, and we remain committed to evolving our solution in close collaboration with our clients to better serve these important projects,” says Eero Lyytikäinen, Sales Director at Vektor.io.

Information Models Supporting Decision-Making and Collaboration

Vektor.io consolidates various baseline data and design materials of the tramway project into a user-friendly, browser-based interface. This allows planners, builders, decision-makers, and other stakeholders to visually and interactively explore the tram route, street design solutions, and technical details in real time. Vektor.io also integrates seamlessly with the project’s information management systems, such as M-Files, which is commonly used in tramway projects.

Toward a More Functional and Sustainable Vantaa

The Vantaa light rail aims to establish a fast and reliable public transport connection from Mellunmäki in Helsinki through Tikkurila to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. This will enable a vibrant and compact urban structure. The tram route spans 19.3 kilometers, includes 27 stops, and had a total estimated cost of €606 million in 2023. The project supports future mobility needs and contributes to Vantaa’s goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2030.

Vektor.io’s role in the project reinforces this holistic vision: the technology enables better collaboration, clearer communication, and more efficient project management—key elements for the success of a major infrastructure initiative.
